Strelitzia Reginaeis more commonly known as the ‘Bird of Paradise’ as its Spring to Summer blooms resemble a fiery orange crest with a purple tongue. Its exotic looks give a tropical feel thats perfect for a border or by the pool.

Leaves measure around 50cms and it grows to an overall height of 1.5 metres. This makes it great as a mid-height plant which is tricky to find. Itll survive on low water levels but will need a regular watering commitment for the first 12 weeks while its roots are sent out.

Virtually bomb-proof the Bird of Paradise plant withstands drought once its established, fends off most diseases and handles full sun or part shade. The flowers are also great for picking and will hold in a vase easily for weeks on end.

A more reliable and cheerful plant youll be hard-pressed to find. We love it.

  • What to use me for: My bird-like bright orange blooms look great planted in large numbers. You can put me in poolside pots on the deck and Im also a great cut flower for a modern vase.

  • I grow to: 1.5 metres in height and the same across.

  • I am currently: When I knock on your door Ill be approx 20-25cm – perfect for planting straight outside.

  • Where to place me: Put me in full sun to part-shade. Ill withstand salty conditions and drought there.

  • How far to space me:Plant my friends with at least 1 metre of space around me.

  • Soil Conditions:I approve of most soil conditions so long as they are not waterlogged. A layer of mulch and a spring feed will help me grow new flowers with stunning colour.

  • My features: Im pretty striking and one of the most recognisable plants around, but despite these tropical looks Im low maintenance, tough and hardy. This makes me an ideal beginner plant or homed with someone who is busy.
